Firstly, congratulations on officially graduating! As exciting as it is to graduate, getting into the job market can be overwhelming and stressful post–grad. Being new to the job market may seem like a huge hurdle, but it could be considered a good time to get into the job market due to the current worker shortage in Canada and new jobs being created. According to a survey from Express Employment Professionals, about half of Canadian companies (47%) plan to hire recent university and college graduates this year, up from 43% last year and a significant increase from 36% in 2020. So where does that leave you? With some preparation and persistence, you’ll be on your way to landing a position that is right for you. In this blog post, we’ll provide you with some helpful job search tips to make the process a little easier.
- Apply and network beyond online resources: Did you know over 60% of available jobs are not advertised? Access the hidden job market by going beyond online job advertisements! Connect with alumni, professors, and industry professionals to expand your network and learn about job opportunities.
- Gain experience: Look for internships, co-op programs, or volunteer opportunities to gain experience. You can also create personal projects that showcase your skills like a website, blog, or a project related to your field of interest. Additionally, attending workshops, conferences, and webinars can help you stay up to date on the latest trends.
- Tailor your resume and cover letter: Tailor your resume and cover letter to be specific to the job posting and highlight your relevant skills and experiences. Customize your application materials for each job you apply to. Check out our recent blog on how to stand out with your resume.
- Practice interviewing: Practice interviewing with friends or family and get them to provide feedback on your responses, body language, and overall presentation. If you aren’t able to have someone to do a mock interview with you, use your phone to record yourself answering the questions.
- Research the company: Doing your research prepares you for interviews but can also be a key indicator in understanding if the company you are applying for is the right fit. Knowing information about the company also gives you an upper hand to stand out from other applicants and to emphasize how your goals align with theirs.
By following these tips, newly graduated job seekers can improve their chances of finding a job that aligns with their skills and interests. Looking for work can be a challenging process, but it’s important to stay positive and persistent. Celebrate small victories along the way and keep working towards your goals!
