WestShore Chamber of Commerce, in search of much needed administrative support found precisely what they were looking for through WorkLink’s federally funded youth employment program. Through the Skills Training and Readiness for Tomorrow, or START program, WestShore Chamber hired Genevieve, a keen program participant on a 12-week, work experience wage subsidy placement. Chamber Executive Director, Julie Lawlor, describes how beneficial it was welcoming Genevieve to the Chamber team.
“Having a young and curious new member on our team was fantastic. The additional hands-on support she provided made a significant impact; we were finally able to tackle tasks we had not been able to, moving projects forward effectively. She provided us with new perspectives, and her cheerfulness, eagerness to learn, and positive attitude boosted team morale throughout the placement,” said Julie.
The START Wage Subsidy allowed the Chamber to trial an administrative support role, advance stalled projects, and provide a Genevieve with valuable work experience, without compromising the budget.
Julie shared, “The START program’s funding fills a crucial gap for organizations unable to hire permanent staff due to budget constraints. Following repeated unsuccessful attempts to secure funding amid scarce grant funding, the START program subsidy is a rare and valuable opportunity.”
For businesses considering hiring through the START wage subsidy program, Julie has one clear message:
“It is an excellent opportunity to teach, train, and mentor youth in your community while simultaneously gaining organizational capacity . For employers considering adding a new permanent position to their business, the START program placement can allow you to trial having that new role, refine your onboarding, and identify key skills required.”
The challenge of hiring individuals at the beginning of their career journey or with limited experience can feel risky. Accessing the START wage subsidy eases financial pressure and allows the employer and new hire to try working together in a low-risk environment.
“Our START participant was so willing to help with anything and everything. Intent and motivation to grow are more important than prior experience for success. Hiring individuals at the beginning of their career journey or who have limited experience provides a valuable opportunity to be a mentor! You get to help a young person explore strengths and growth areas and understand what they like and don’t like in a real work setting.”
By hiring through the START program, employers not only gain extra support but also play an important role in developing the next generation of workers. To get the most out of a placement, Julie recommends taking time for mentorship and feedback.
“The program suits organizations ready to invest in interaction time and mentorship for developing talent. This dynamic creates a mutually beneficial relationship in which the hire gains experience and the employer gains capacity”.
