Christina’s Journey: Uncertain Beginnings to a Hopeful Future

At 29 years old and a single mother, Christina found herself attempting to reenter the workforce after being a full-time mom for 6 years, facing the challenge of balancing parenthood and her career aspirations. The transition into single motherhood had been difficult, leaving her feeling isolated and uncertain about her future.

Christina didn’t know how much her life would change when she enrolled in the START Employment Skills Training Program.

Christina participated in six weeks of in-person facilitation, where she attended employment workshops, mock interviews, and other essential life skills workshops, including cooking classes. Christina was also able to gain multiple certificates, including Occupational First Aid Level 1, FoodSafe, WHMIS, Serving It Right, and more. “The START program helped me gain the confidence I needed to get back into the workforce, as well as provide me with certificates that I may have never achieved on my own. I can now apply for a broader range of jobs”, said Christina.

The START program’s supportive environment also played a role in her journey. “I appreciated the community of support I gained from START, which I lacked for the past six years. It has allowed me to build the confidence to re-enter the workforce,” she reflected. The peer connections she formed with fellow participants fostered a sense of belonging. Additionally, through the hands-on team-building activities, Christina also developed personal insights and a stronger sense of self.

Now, Christina feels more optimistic and motivated than ever. “I enjoyed the START program. It’s a great benefit to the community, and I hope more people will have the opportunity to participate in it. I will be recommending it to the people I know who are stuck in life and need help finding employment”, said Christina.

From uncertain beginnings to a hopeful future, Christina’s journey is a powerful reminder that with the right tools and support from her peers, you can make a difference in your life. Christina is now going in the right direction to build a better future for herself and her child.
