At 19, Daxia was a part-time student who had previously volunteered in the community. Although she enjoyed her volunteer work, she was eager to transition into the professional workforce. Daxia recognized the importance of gaining meaningful work experience and knew she needed some support. When Daxia heard about the START program in October 2024, it felt like the perfect opportunity. Little did she know that the START program would enhance her employability and help her build strong connections with peers.
From the beginning, the START program made her feel at home. Alongside fellow participants, Daxia participated in six weeks of group facilitation, which included employment and life skills workshops. Additionally, she gained multiple short-term certificates, giving her even more experience to add to her resume. Daxia noted that the resources and tools she gained from the START program would have been difficult to access without her participation.
Along with the skills and certificates she developed, Daxia was able to connect with a community of like-minded peers. She described her experience as “more than positive; it was incredibly beneficial and became a safe space for me.” The time spent with her peers created an atmosphere of trust and support, allowing her to flourish personally and professionally. Not only did the program foster friendships, but she also made connections that would last beyond the program.
Equipped with tools and resources from the START program, Daxia is now confident and ready to start her job search. “I am so grateful for this experience, and as a result, I’ve gained the willingness and confidence to put myself out there,” said Daxia.
For those interested in the program, Daxia encouraged others to seize the opportunity and apply for START by saying, “A chance like this can give you so much if you let it.”
