Kirin’s Journey: Finding Confidence Through the START Program

For Kirin, joining the START Employment Skills Training Program in January 2024 was a pivotal moment in his life, one that helped him find his footing in a competitive job market and instilled in him a sense of confidence and direction.

Like many young adults, Kirin faced challenges while navigating the job market. During his early life, he lived in Istanbul, Beijing, and Warsaw, where his parents worked at international schools. After returning home to Canada to attend university, he settled in Victoria and set out to find a fulfilling job using the skills he gained from education and travel experience. However, as he began his job search, he quickly realized that the task would be much more challenging than anticipated.

Despite his best efforts, Kirin struggled to find a suitable job that matched his skills and interests. He knew he needed something to kickstart his momentum and give him a new perspective on his search. That’s when he learned about the START Employment Skills Training Program at WorkLink Westshore.

Initially, he was apprehensive about applying for the program. “I was terrified making that first phone call, and even more so when I was asked to come for a pre-screening interview. Nearly all my worries were brushed aside within 10 minutes of attending the first session,” said Kirin. Not only did he notice the positive atmosphere within the program, but also how well all the participants worked together. This gave him the reassurance he needed to continue with the program.

Through six weeks of group facilitation within the START program, Kirin achieved his job search goals, such as improving his resume, earning certifications, and participating in group activities. “The routine and structured curriculum did a great deal to get the ball rolling in my employment,” said Kirin.

Kirin found that one of the most significant advantages of joining the START program was the workspace, which allowed him to concentrate on his work without distractions. “The simple fact of having a quiet segregated area to work in and think things through, away from home, made a world of difference,” explained Kirin.

The sense of belonging and support system was another aspect of Kirin’s success within the START program. “Feeling like I belong to a group of people that not only share the same goals but our understanding of life’s circumstances, nonjudgmental, and whom I can trust to confide in and be vulnerable with during this challenging transition period in life, has been a keystone feature of the program for me,” said Kirin. Together, they fostered a deep sense of camaraderie and trust within individuals who shared similar aspirations.

Kirin’s journey reminds us that a sense of belonging can be a powerful force in fostering confidence and personal growth. Thanks to the START Employment Skills Training Program, young adults, including Kirin, have found the tools they need to succeed in their job search, regardless of their previous experiences or background. “Give it a shot. No matter where you’re coming from or your life circumstances, there’s something in this program for virtually everyone,” said Kirin.
