Experienced Job Seekers (50+ years)

Objective: In this workshop you will learn the benefits of your skills and value as well as age diversity in the workplace. Finding meaningful work in this employment climate isn’t easy but there are more opportunities than before to explore or navigate.

We will discuss the characteristics of the five generations that are present in the workplace and the benefits each generation brings. You will learn the current trends in job search techniques and how to highlight your lived experience when writing a resume and participating in an interview. Leaving this session, you will feel more confident and empowered to display your values, competencies and skills to find meaningful employment!

Networking Skills

Objective: Over 60% of available jobs are not advertised! Networking gets results. You will leave this workshop knowing how to access employment opportunities beyond published job postings.

We will review your networking web, point out the benefit to researching potential employers, encouraged to write and practice a 30 second introduction. We will discuss how social media can add to your network. We will also discuss that the use of the Internet to research and create a list of potential employers will kick start your networking skills and opportunities.

To optimize your learning: Please bring a copy of your resume, and any job postings your are going to apply to. For this workshop, it’s helpful if know what type of Job, Industry or Field you are looking to apply to.

Rev Up Your Resume

Objective: You need a tailored resume to get an interview! This workshop will help you create a targeted resume that will make you shine as a job applicant.

At first, you’ll be asked to list your values that are important to you as an employee and you need have present in the workplace. After some self research and reflection, you will learn how to write an attention-grabbing HOT ZONE! We will discuss how to tailor your resume to job descriptions and use accomplishment statements to clearly demonstrate how you meet the required core competencies in the context of the position you are applying for. You will learn the PAR ( Problem/ task – Action- Result/ benefit) method for creating accomplishments statements and identify strong verbs and adjectives to bring your achievements and successes to life.

To optimize your learning: It would be helpful to have a paper or electronic version of your resume available and a way to save your documents electronically. In addition, if you have a job description for a job you wish to apply for, please bring that along.

Cover Letter Writing

Objective: A good cover letter can help you stand out from the crowd. Learn how to correctly format a cover letter and use it to sell yourself.

Tailor you cover letter to the job you want to apply to, make yourself stand out from the pack. The main point of a cover letter is to add to the information you provided in your resume by including valuable additional information about yourself. We will discuss the formatting components of a professional cover letter. You will be provided with some good resources to apply to your cover letter.

To optimize your learning: You should have the job description of the position for which you are applying.

Interview Skills

Objective: You will feel prepared and more confident when participating in an interview and learn how to articulate the answers to some common behavioral questions.

In this workshop you will be introduced to the different formats for interviews and learn how to give a good first impression. We will discuss possible answers to commonly asked interview questions using the STAR technique, particularly those tricky behavioral questions. In addition, we will prepare questions that you may have for your potential employers. As a group we will participate in a “mock” interview. You will leave this workshop feeling more confident, deal with interview “jitters,” and stand out from the crowd!

To optimize your learning: Please bring a copy of your resume if you have one available

Skills ID

Objective: Learn the difference between skills and core competencies, and how these relate to job descriptions. Take time to do some self research and reflection, find out what values are important to you. Make a list of your core competencies, soft and transferable skills. You will learn to identify your skills and categorize them to clearly articulate on a resume, during interviews and in interactions with potential employers.

In this workshop, we will discuss the nine Skills for Success that people need for work, learning and life. We will have discussions around NOC and encourage further research for what skills are required for interested Industries in your job search. By the end of this workshop, you will know what your HARD SKILLS, SOFT SKILLS AND TRANSFERRABLE SKILLS are.

To optimize your learning: It would be helpful for you to bring a copy of your resume or as much information as possible about your past job descriptions to make notes on for further revising.

Career Planning

Objective: You will participate in a variety of career planning discussions to determine career options and feel more confident about your career decision-making process through self and work research.

This is a workshop where you will participate in group discussions and to learn how to assess your skills, values, personality traits, and interests as they relate to various career options. Through self research, reflection and work research and reflection, you’ll see that understanding yourself and knowing about the potential employer, work environment and culture so you will make more sustainable work choices. You will be introduced to basic psychological principles regarding job satisfaction and determine how they relate to your past and future employment. Researching careers of interest, you will be introduced to the concept of a cost/benefit analysis for educational paths. You will be more self-aware and empowered to make employment-related decisions.

To optimize your learning: Reflect on what type of jobs you have had in the past and what caused your satisfaction or dissatisfaction within those jobs. You may notice your positive routines, patterns and behaviors by collecting feedback from past co-workers, clients or friends to enhance looking for a more suitable and sustainable job, employer or work environment.

Basic Computer Skills

Objective: Empower participants with fundamental computer vocabulary and skills, enabling them to confidently navigate and utilize computers.

This workshop will enable the participant to understand the basic differences between the most common computer devices and provide hands-on experience to strengthen essential skills such as keyboard typing, drag-and-drop functionality, and accessing icons on the taskbar or desktop. The main purpose is to optimize the learning experience by providing practical, interactive sessions that build foundational computer competencies.

Interpersonal Skills

Objective: This workshop presents to participants what Interpersonal Skills and Emotional intelligence (EQ) are and how it is important to know and utilize these topics as one aspect of your positive Transferable skills in the workplace.

We will have open and safe discussions on learning and asking questions on reviewing Interpersonal Skills and EQ like, knowing what your triggers are, or how Interpersonal skills and EQ play a role in a positive work environment and culture.

Be prepared to offer some of your experiences and learning moments on Interpersonal skills and Emotional Intelligence through safe and healthy self research and reflection time.

 

To optimize your Learning: Be open to discussion and self reflection during these 2 hours and offer and lived and work experience to date to enhance the workshop discussion or points.

Transferable Skills

Objective: This workshop highlights what transferable skills are and builds on what you learn in the Rev Up Your Resume Workshop.

Your transferable skills are essential to know, highlight and apply to your Cover letter, Resume and especially in your Interview. Transferable skills show how you will benefit your next Employer through the values and skills you have as an employee to ensure a positive work culture and environment.

This workshop will allow for 1-2 exercises of identifying your Transferable skills to applying it to an Behavioral Interview question example or in an Accomplishment statement.

Financial Literacy

Objective: Learn simple practical ways to manage your money.

Learn what a budget is and how to use one. Set SMART goals and make an ACTION plan to find ways to reduce spending and save money to plan for those times when expenses can sneak up on you. Need a side-hustle? Discover ways to earn more income, and tips and tricks to save even more money. A good way to know about your spending is to know what is important to you, be prepared to share and explore managing your budget by going through some self-reflection and research. By matching your spending habits to your values, needs and examining your wants, there will be good discussion on your finances and on what budget tool works best for you, online apps? Pen to paper? Or?
