PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Paid Group Sessions
Earn $17.85 per hour for 30 hours per week while participating in a six-week START program led by experienced facilitators. Build real-world job skills, gain industry-recognized certifications, and learn how to create a strong resume, prepare for interviews, and communicate confidently in the workplace.

Develop Essential Life & Employment Skills
Take part in interactive workshops that focus on resume building, interview practice, workplace communication, and understanding employer expectations. You will also strengthen life skills such as time management, teamwork, problem solving, financial basics, and confidence at work. With guidance from facilitators and support from your peers, START helps you feel prepared, supported, and ready to move into employment or training.

Gain Industry Certifications
Gain practical, employer-valued certifications through the START Program, including WHMIS, FoodSafe, Serving It Right and Selling It Right, Occupational First Aid Level 1, SuperHost, DogSafe Canine First Aid, and cashier training. These credentials help you stand out to employers and prepare you for roles in retail, hospitality, customer service, and other entry-level positions.
Work Experience
Participants may have the opportunity to take part in up to eight weeks of paid, hands-on work experience, supported by a wage subsidy that helps build real-world skills and professional confidence.

Jaeden’s Journey: Rebuilding Momentum Through START
At 23, Jaeden joined the START Youth Employment Program after returning home and looking to rebuild momentum in his career. Through the program, he strengthened his workplace skills, developed stronger job search tools, and earned industry-recognized certifications. The experience also provided space for reflection, connection, and personal growth alongside professional development.
Kirin’s Journey: Finding Confidence Through the START Program
Like many young adults, Kirin faced challenges while navigating the job market. During his early life, he lived in Istanbul, Beijing, and Warsaw, where his parents worked at international schools. After returning home to Canada to attend university, he settled in Victoria and set out to find a fulfilling job using the skills he gained from education and travel experience. However, as he began his job search, he quickly realized that the task would be much more challenging than anticipated.
Sébastien’s Journey: From Uncertainty to Sustainable Employment
After graduating from high school, Sébastien struggled to find direction and remained disconnected from work or training opportunities. When he joined the START Program, he gained employability skills and certifications, including DogSafe, which aligned with his interest in working with animals. With support from the program, he secured a placement at K9 Sk8 Park, a local doggy daycare.
Pauline’s Journey: Empowering Transformation
Daxia's Journey: Empowered for Success
At 19, Daxia was a part-time student who had previously volunteered in the community. Although she enjoyed her volunteer work, she was eager to transition into the professional workforce. Daxia recognized the importance of gaining meaningful work experience and knew she needed some support. When Daxia heard about the START program in October 2024, it felt like the perfect opportunity. Little did she know that the START program would enhance her employability and help her build strong connections with peers. Â
Christina’s Journey: Uncertain Beginnings to a Hopeful Future
At 29, Christina joined the START Program while navigating life as a single mother and preparing to reenter the workforce after six years at home. Through workshops, certifications, and hands-on training, she gained valuable skills and renewed confidence in her ability to pursue employment. The supportive environment and peer connections helped her rebuild a sense of community and direction.
Aras’s Journey: Turning Challenges into Triumph
At 16, Aras joined the START Program with a clear goal: get a job, save for a car, and finish high school strong. Despite challenges, he was determined to turn things around and build a better future. Through START, he earned certifications, strengthened his job-search skills, and soon secured a position at Superstore.Â

Ryen joined the START Youth Employment & Skills Strategy Program hoping to find a career path that matched his passion for working with his hands and the outdoors. Through hands-on training and supportive workshops, he built confidence, communication skills, and the tools needed to enter the workforce. What began as a journey for a shy and introverted participant became a turning point that helped him grow into a confident young man.

After graduating high school and completing his first year of university, Jakob took a gap year to explore his interests and gain work experience. He joined the START Program to strengthen his job readiness and quickly built skills in resume writing, interview preparation, and professional development. When Shreya joined the START Program, she was new to Canada and navigating an unfamiliar job market.
